Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle has challenged the FIA's decision to end the 2026 British Grand Prix under safety car conditions at Silverstone. The race concluded without a green-flag finish after a late safety car deployment.
The safety car was deployed on lap 48 following Max Verstappen's spin into the gravel at Stowe. Race leader Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton pitted under the safety car, allowing George Russell to move into second place.
Brundle argued during the Sky Sports F1 broadcast that race control was not required to wait for lapped cars to rejoin before restarting. He stated that the regulations allow the safety car to extinguish its lights once lapped cars have overtaken the leaders, without needing them at the back of the queue.
The FIA later issued a statement explaining that Article B5.13.5 requires one lap after the unlapping procedure. It attributed the erroneous 'Safety Car In This Lap' message on lap 51 to a software error.
