A legal expert described the situation as a 'real mess,' expressing disbelief at the absence of estate planning from the detail-oriented artist. Comerica Bank & Trust was appointed administrator as courts determined heirs: sister Tyka Nelson and half-siblings Sharon, Norrine, and John R. Nelson; Omarr Baker; and Alfred Jackson. Three siblings sold shares to Primary Wave, securing control of half the estate, while the others partnered with advisors L. Londell McMillan and Charles Spicer for Prince Legacy LLC. The probate case concluded in 2022 with a $156 million IRS valuation and an even split between Prince Oat Holdings LLC and Prince Legacy LLC, allowing heirs to 'protect and grow Prince’s incomparable legacy,' they said. However, disputes persisted. In 2024, McMillan and Spicer sued siblings Sharon and Norrine Nelson, accusing them of attempting to oust them from Prince Legacy despite lacking industry experience. A judge ruled in favor of the advisors, affirming their 'broad and exclusive' powers, though some issues remain in Delaware court. Later that year, Primary Wave and Prince Legacy halted a Netflix documentary by Ezra Edelman over alleged inaccuracies, leading to an estate-approved replacement in early 2025. Edelman called it a 'joke,' prioritizing avoidance of lawsuits. Last year, singer Apollonia sued the estate over trademark disputes tied to her name, claiming an aggressive campaign post-Prince's death. The estate countered that it targeted improper registrations from the chaotic period after his passing. The case settled confidentially last month.
