Record industry proposes labels for AI-generated music

The record industry has announced plans for voluntary labels on music that uses generative AI. The move comes from major organizations including the RIAA and the Grammys.

Over 35 years after the Parental Advisory sticker, groups in the music community are proposing digital markers on tracks created or assisted by AI.

A joint announcement from the Recording Industry Association of America, the Grammys, SAG-AFTRA and others outlined a system with a black “AI” block for fully AI-generated songs and a smaller “ai” block for AI-assisted tracks.

IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier said fans want to know how generative AI is used in music. Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. added that the labels will keep creativity and authorship at the center of songs.

The proposal follows reports that AI-generated tracks make up a large share of new uploads on services like Deezer and Apple Music. It remains unclear when streaming platforms will adopt the labels.
