Founding Xbox staff member revives early hardware concerns

Laura Fryer, an original Xbox team member from the 1990s, stated in a new video that her early doubts about Microsoft entering the hardware market are resurfacing after 25 years.

Fryer joined Microsoft Game Studios in the 1990s and worked as a producer on titles including Crimson Skies before becoming a founding Xbox team member. She recalled initial skepticism that the company was abandoning its dominant Windows platform for an untested hardware venture.

In the video, Fryer highlighted current pressures on Xbox including an AI-driven hardware shortage, reduced game sales due to Game Pass, and rapid expansion that has increased industry risks. She noted that unlike Sony, Nintendo, or Steam, Microsoft’s core Windows business leaves it more exposed to hardware losses.

Fryer predicted that Xbox will eventually refocus around Windows rather than being discontinued, with efforts to deliver a console-like experience on PC. She added that Microsoft recognizes the value of a dedicated living room device despite economic challenges.
