Lo scrittore nicaraguense Sergio Ramírez è stato eletto giovedì per occupare il seggio L della Real Academia Española, rimasto vacante dopo la morte di Mario Vargas Llosa nell'aprile 2025.

La votazione a porte chiuse si è svolta durante la sessione plenaria dell'accademia a Madrid. Ramírez era l'unico candidato e ha ricevuto il sostegno degli accademici Víctor García de la Concha, Luis Mateo Díez e del direttore Santiago Muñoz Machado. Il nuovo membro ha un massimo di due anni per pronunciare il suo discorso di insediamento. Ramírez, vincitore del Premio Cervantes nel 2017 e autore di oltre settanta libri, vive in esilio in Spagna dal 2021 dopo essersi visto revocare la cittadinanza nicaraguense. Nel 2023 il regime di Daniel Ortega gli ha revocato la cittadinanza. Un gruppo di 214 intellettuali provenienti da diversi paesi ha sostenuto la sua candidatura nonostante le obiezioni di alcune vittime del sandinismo.
