Tesla sees 36% drop in European EV registrations for October

Tesla's electric vehicle registrations in key European markets fell 36.3% year-over-year in October 2025, with only France showing growth. The decline affected nine major countries, totaling 4,170 units compared to 6,549 the previous year. Year-to-date figures indicate a broader 30% drop across Europe.

Tesla Inc. reported a significant downturn in European EV sales for October 2025, based on registration data from nine key markets including France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Austria, Finland, and Sweden. Overall, registrations dropped 36.3% year-over-year to 4,170 units from 6,549 in October 2024.

Country-specific figures highlight the disparity: France bucked the trend with an 83.7% increase to 1,784 units from 971, attributed to a new EV incentive program for low- to middle-income buyers. In contrast, Sweden saw an 88.7% decline to 133 units from 1,175, marking its worst month in a year amid a dispute with the IF Metall union. Norway registrations fell 50.2% to 671 from 1,348, while the Netherlands dropped 47.9% to 645 from 1,238. Other markets experienced similar slumps: Spain down 30.6% to 393, Italy 47.1% to 256, Portugal 58.7% to 144, Austria 64.5% to 97, and Finland 67.6% to 47.

Year-to-date through ten months, Tesla's European registrations totaled 177,000 units, a decline of over 30% from more than 255,000 in 2024. In Germany, Europe's largest auto market, Tesla sales fell 50% in the first nine months despite a 38% rise in overall EV registrations. Chinese competitors like BYD, Xpeng, and Zeekr overtook Tesla in Denmark and Spain.

Analysts point to brand damage linked to Elon Musk and intensifying competition from European, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese automakers as key factors. A brief September rebound gave way to renewed weakness in October, even before the Model Y refresh became widely available. Tesla's challenges persist despite strong U.S. performance driven by expiring tax credits.
