Hong Kong Island promenade completes after 16 years

Hong Kong Island's 13km promenade will be fully connected after 16 years of planning and construction, with its final 1.1km section in North Point opening to the public on Monday.

Hong Kong Island’s 13km (8-mile) promenade will be fully connected after 16 years of planning and construction, with the last section of the boardwalk in North Point opening to the public on Monday.

The Development Bureau announced on Sunday that the eastern section of the East Coast Boardwalk spans 1.1km from the North Point Promenade to Hoi Yu Street in Quarry Bay, featuring a glass observatory deck and open spaces.

“[It marks] the last kilometre to connect the approximately 13-kilometre-long harbourfront on Hong Kong Island, from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan, fulfilling one of the visions of harbourfront development,” the bureau said.

The promenade section offers a dedicated pedestrian walkway as well as a shared path for activities such as strolling, jogging, and cycling. Pet owners can bring leashed animals to the harbourfront.

A highlight is the glass observatory deck, allowing visitors to view the harbour beneath the boardwalk from 10am to 6pm daily. The facility will close temporarily during adverse weather, and visitors must wear on-site provided shoe covers for safety and to protect the glass surface.

This completion links the Victoria Harbour shoreline, enhancing public recreational spaces and advancing harbourfront enhancement goals.
