事故は土曜日の午前11時頃、名護市の屋外レース場で発生した。女性は6人の観光客グループの一員で、全地形対応車（ATV）の操作講習を受けていた。
女性が誤ってアクセルを踏み込んだことで車両が急加速し、バランスを崩して転倒した。その際、頭部の左側を強く打ち、大量に出血した。
女性はドクターヘリで病院に搬送されたが、意識不明の状態が続いている。香港の入境事務処は、家族からの要請を受けて中国外交部駐香港特派員公署および在福岡中国総領事館と連絡を取り、支援を行っていると発表した。
