Apple TV Foundation series splits Asimov villain into two characters

The Apple TV adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation has diverged from the books by presenting the Mule and Magnifico Giganticus as separate figures in Season 3.

Showrunner David S. Goyer introduced the Mule, played by Pilou Asbæk, as a direct and intimidating threat from the start of the season. Magnifico, portrayed by Tómas Lemarquis, appears as an independent and empathetic servant rather than the Mule in disguise.

In the original novels, Magnifico is revealed as the Mule, a twist that the series replaced with a different bait-and-switch. Bayta Darell, played by Synnøve Karlsen, is shown as the Mule in the television version.

Goyer explained the decision in comments to /Film. He noted that audiences often underestimate female characters and chose to make the reveal more surprising by casting an unassuming social media influencer in the role.

The changes reflect Goyer's broader approach to adapting the source material while preparing for Season 4, which has been officially greenlit.
