Mercedes confirms incremental F1 upgrades amid rival resurgence

Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin has outlined the team's approach of delivering steady performance updates to its W17 car following the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Shovlin spoke after the Silverstone weekend, where George Russell finished second and Kimi Antonelli encountered a wheel shield issue. He noted recent gains by Ferrari and Red Bull but stressed the focus remains on Mercedes' own reliability and operations.

The team has chosen smaller, frequent updates over a single major package. "We're bringing performance to it. We haven't done a massive kit like some of our competitors," Shovlin said.

Shovlin also highlighted the car's versatility across circuits and the preparations needed for the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, scheduled for 17-19 July as the 10th round of the 2026 season.

"Spa is a really weird track, difficult from an energy point of view," he added, underscoring ongoing work to optimize performance there.
