Bungie details Marathon story plans for years ahead, stresses player input and newcomer accessibility

Bungie has outlined its long-term story vision for the live-service extraction shooter Marathon, with creative director Julia Nardin emphasizing player influence and ensuring every season serves as an entry point for new players. Season 2 launches in early June amid positive updates and review praise.

In a GamesRadar+ interview, Bungie creative director Julia Nardin revealed the studio's plans for Marathon's sci-fi storyline on Tau Ceti IV over the next few years. "We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it," she said, calling player collaboration "part of the magic of playing a live service game."

Marathon sees players as runners imprinting consciousness into artificial shells to scavenge loot and data amid the ruins of an abandoned colony and orbiting ship. The core backstory of colonists and a rogue AI remains static for newcomers, while broader world-building evolves with player excitement and game events.

"It’s also important that players can jump into Marathon at any time," Nardin added. "They’ll always be able to uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while experiencing its present. We want every season to be a new entry point, and for new players to be able to understand what's going on regardless of how long we've all been running."

As Season 1 nears its end, Season 2 is set for early June, with updates through August. Recent patches have boosted player enjoyment—aside from a grenade issue—with the free-sponsored kit limited-time mode proving popular. Eurogamer awarded it 4/5, praising its 'impeccably stylish' design, 'sumptuous combat,' and maps 'riddled with secrets.' Bungie reaffirmed its commitment in a March PC optimization blog: “We are in it for the long haul with Marathon.” Estimates suggest over 2 million copies sold, mostly on PC, backed by Sony's investment despite sustainability questions.
