Private firms gain flexibility in choosing WFH day under energy program

Following the WFH mandate for civil servants every Friday, Labor Minister Yassierli has given private companies flexibility to select their own day for one weekly work-from-home (WFH) session, effective April 1, 2026, via Ministerial Circular M/6/HK.04/III/2026.

In Jakarta on April 1, 2026, Labor Minister Yassierli clarified that private companies can choose their WFH day based on internal policies, unlike civil servants (ASN) who are mandated to WFH on Fridays as announced the previous day.

"The issue of the day (for WFH) for private workers is such that there are many day options (companies can choose). However, if wanting to align with ASN colleagues, the option can be Friday," Yassierli said.

This policy, part of the broader workplace energy optimization program directed by President Prabowo Subianto, requires companies to ensure full salaries, preserved annual leave rights, and sustained productivity during WFH. Exemptions apply to critical sectors including energy, health, infrastructure, retail, industry, services, food and beverage, transport, logistics, and finance.

An evaluation will follow after two months, akin to the ASN policy, with technical implementation left to each company's characteristics. This circular fulfills the preview given by Yassierli during the March 31 announcement of the ASN mandate.

Positive reactions highlight salary protection and relief from traffic. Skeptical views question voluntary adoption by companies, potential productivity drops, and disparity with ASN mandates. Humorous memes predict Friday WFH and mixed feelings on implementation.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that a work-from-home policy on Fridays could save fuel oil without disrupting national productivity. He made the remarks during a meeting at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday. The policy is still under discussion and directly monitored by President Prabowo Subianto.

The meeting also addressed protein self-sufficiency and food security.

The expected savings from reducing sick leave compensation in the public sector are not materializing as hoped. Public sector employees are adopting strategies to retain their full salary despite the reform. Announced in October 2024, this measure aimed to curb costly absenteeism for the state.
