Private firms gain flexibility in choosing WFH day under energy program

Following the WFH mandate for civil servants every Friday, Labor Minister Yassierli has given private companies flexibility to select their own day for one weekly work-from-home (WFH) session, effective April 1, 2026, via Ministerial Circular M/6/HK.04/III/2026.

In Jakarta on April 1, 2026, Labor Minister Yassierli clarified that private companies can choose their WFH day based on internal policies, unlike civil servants (ASN) who are mandated to WFH on Fridays as announced the previous day.

"The issue of the day (for WFH) for private workers is such that there are many day options (companies can choose). However, if wanting to align with ASN colleagues, the option can be Friday," Yassierli said.

This policy, part of the broader workplace energy optimization program directed by President Prabowo Subianto, requires companies to ensure full salaries, preserved annual leave rights, and sustained productivity during WFH. Exemptions apply to critical sectors including energy, health, infrastructure, retail, industry, services, food and beverage, transport, logistics, and finance.

An evaluation will follow after two months, akin to the ASN policy, with technical implementation left to each company's characteristics. This circular fulfills the preview given by Yassierli during the March 31 announcement of the ASN mandate.

President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia overcame the Covid-19 pandemic through efficiencies like working from home, which significantly saved fuel. He emphasized the need to prepare for worst-case scenarios from the Middle East conflict that could raise fuel prices.
