Indonesia's government has mandated work from home (WFH) for civil servants (ASN) every Friday starting April 1, 2026, to boost energy and mobility efficiency. The policy, set via circulars from MenpanRB and Mendagri, could save the state budget Rp6.2 trillion. Private firms, BUMN, and BUMD are urged to follow suit through a forthcoming Menaker circular.

Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto announced WFH for ASN in central and local agencies for one workday per week, every Friday. The policy takes effect from April 1, 2026, and will be evaluated after two months. "Penerapan work from home bagi ASN di instansi pusat dan daerah yang dilakukan sebanyak satu hari kerja dalam seminggu, yaitu setiap hari Jumat yang diatur melalui surat edaran (SE) dari MenpanRB dan SE Mendagri," Airlangga said at a press conference on March 31, 2026.

The measure is expected to save the state budget Rp6.2 trillion in BBM compensation and Rp59 trillion for society overall. The government will also limit official vehicles by 50 percent (except operational and electric ones), promote public transport, and cut domestic trips by 50 percent and international by 70 percent.

Labor Minister Yassierli said a circular urging WFH and an Energy Optimization Program for private companies, BUMN, and BUMD will be issued soon. "Segera kita akan umumkan ke teman-teman media dan publik," she stated. Public services like health, security, and cleanliness, plus strategic sectors such as industry and energy, are exempt.

PANRB Minister Rini Widyantini described WFH as a chance to improve digital governance, focusing on outcomes under Ministerial Regulation No. 4 of 2025. Primary and secondary education remains fully in-person five days a week, while higher education from semester four adjusts per relevant ministry policies.

Discussions on X about Indonesia's mandate for civil servants (ASN) to work from home every Friday starting April 1, 2026, show predominantly skeptical sentiments. Many users fear it creates disguised long weekends, reduces productivity, and hampers public services, especially for non-digital workflows. Some support the policy for potential savings of Rp6.2 trillion in fuel and budget amid energy concerns. Questions are raised about applicability to teachers, health workers, and private sectors.
