Splatoon Raiders redesigned over colonialist concerns

Developers of Splatoon Raiders altered the game's visual direction after early prototypes evoked themes of invasion and exploitation. The changes aimed to shift focus from a resort-like island setting to an eerie environment. The game remains scheduled for release on July 23.

Art director Koji Sonoyama explained that the original concept placed players on remote islands where they appeared to attack Salmonids and seize their treasures. Feedback from the team highlighted sympathy for the creatures, prompting a rethink of the setting and tone.

Sound director Shu Tamura noted that background music with an adventurous vibe reinforced the sense of targeting innocent beings. The team adjusted the design to emphasize unpredictability and geological shifts instead.

Salmonids were reworked to appear more aggressive due to salt on the Spirhalite Islands. This lore element positions the islands far from Splatsville in both location and atmosphere.

The updates kept core elements like Salmonid types and terrain intact while adding a sense of eeriness to the experience.
