Crystal Dynamics details new Tomb Raider games' timeline, development, and Amazon ties

Following the reveal at The Game Awards 2025, Crystal Dynamics has elaborated on Tomb Raider Catalyst (2027 mainline sequel) and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (2026 remake), confirming Catalyst's placement years after Tomb Raider: Underworld—with the Survivor trilogy as Lara Croft's origin—while highlighting shared development resources, a key Amazon Game Studios partnership, and a broader multimedia franchise including a live-action TV series.

Update on Announcement

Building on last week's The Game Awards reveal, Crystal Dynamics shared deeper insights into its two upcoming Tomb Raider titles. Tomb Raider Catalyst, the next mainline adventure releasing in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam, features a more experienced Lara Croft voiced by Alix Wilton Regan (succeeding Camilla Luddington). Game director Will Kerslake positioned it years after Tomb Raider: Underworld, treating the Survivor trilogy as an origin story, and stressed its accessibility: 'No prior knowledge of the series is required.'

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the 1996 original developed by Flying Wild Hog in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, launches in 2026 to mark the franchise's 30th anniversary and sets the stage before Catalyst. Both games share technology, resources, and narrative oversight for consistency.

Amazon Partnership

Amazon Game Studios is publishing both titles and producing a live-action series starring Sophie Turner, slated for 2027. Studio head Scot Amos praised the 'seamless' collaboration: 'Our Amazon partners have been tremendous. They've gotten the idea of this vision we have for this cross-media franchise.' Daily interactions ensure shared creative input, with potential for an interconnected universe.

Development Amid Challenges

These projects advance despite hurdles, including layoffs after Embracer Group's acquisition of Crystal Dynamics. The studio confirms parallel development without conflicts, prioritizing quality and canon adherence under unified leadership. Kerslake and Amos emphasized the focus on excellence.

This dual push heralds a new era for Tomb Raider after nine years since Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018), blending revival and innovation.
