Ethiopia records concrete results in statistics modernization

Ethiopia has achieved concrete results in modernizing its agricultural census and population and health surveys through its statistics sector.

A national conference was held in Addis Ababa under the theme of data sovereignty for policy freedom. It highlighted Ethiopia's progress in its statistics sovereignty journey.

Abdulaziz Shefa, head of the economic statistics sector at the Ethiopian Statistics Service, stated that the main aim of the statistics development program is to produce necessary data for government functions. He noted ongoing work with stakeholders through planning and coordination from concept to results.

The sector conducts household, enterprise, and monthly studies, including a consumer price survey with up to 95 percent verification using scientific methods. It also runs a quarterly labor force survey, an annual agricultural sample survey, and population and health studies every five years.

Shefa added that Ethiopia maintains statistics on crops, livestock, the environment, and urban and rural areas. Past years have seen major achievements in health and agriculture confirmed by these studies.
