John McEnroe shared his thoughts on competing against today's leading players in a recent interview. The former champion offered a modest view of his potential results against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Speaking on the podcast Off Court With Greg Rusedski, McEnroe said he would hope to win three or four matches out of ten against the top players from the Federer, Nadal and Djokovic era. He added that he would expect to do okay, but not exceptionally well, against Alcaraz and Sinner. McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam winner with 77 ATP singles titles, highlighted major shifts in the sport. He noted that modern players benefit from structured early training and advanced equipment that favors baseline play over serve-and-volley tactics. The 170-week former world number one pointed to changes in rackets and strategy since his era. He recalled aggressive returners like Jimmy Connors and Andre Agassi as early signs of the evolution that now dominates professional tennis.
