KAI records peak passengers in 2026 Lebaran return flow

PT Kereta Api Indonesia has recorded the highest daily passenger volumes for long-distance trains during the 2026 Lebaran return phase. Occupancy exceeded 140 percent over four consecutive days. Long-distance train ticket sales reached 109.1 percent of capacity.

JAKARTA -- PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) reported a significant surge in passenger volumes during the 2026 Lebaran return transportation phase. KAI's Vice President of Corporate Communications, Anne Purba, stated that travel time certainty keeps trains as the top choice for the public.

"Over four consecutive days of the return flow, passenger volumes hit the highest levels of the 2026 Lebaran period with occupancy exceeding 140 percent," Anne Purba said in a written statement in Jakarta on Friday (March 27, 2026).

Figures show 242,810 passengers on Sunday (March 22, 2026) at 150.7 percent, rising to 247,025 on Monday (March 23) at 154.1 percent, peaking at 250,650 on Tuesday (March 24) at 153.4 percent, and 230,784 on Wednesday (March 25) at 141.2 percent. These surpass the previous year's record of 223,348 long-distance train passengers.

Overall, long-distance train ticket sales reached 3,896,661 or 109.1 percent of the 3,571,760-seat capacity. Local trains recorded 703,518 tickets or 75.9 percent of 926,936 seats.

From March 11 to 26, 2026, KAI served 3,678,880 passengers on Java and Sumatra, comprising 3,081,467 long-distance and 597,413 local train users. Anne Purba added, "Trains are chosen for their comfort, reliability, and travel certainty."
