LPPOM says Kolesom Jumbo with 19.7 percent alcohol qualifies as khamr

The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Assessment Institute stated that the Kolesom Jumbo drink, which has gone viral on social media, contains up to 19.7 percent alcohol and thus qualifies as khamr.

LPPOM Director General Muti Arintawati made the statement in Jakarta on Friday. She explained that the alcohol level in the drink, made from fermented grapes combined with Kolesom or Javanese ginseng extract, far exceeds that of beer commonly sold in supermarkets.

Muti referred to MUI Fatwa Number 10 of 2018, which classifies drinks containing alcohol or ethanol above 0.5 percent as khamr. Such intoxicating alcoholic drinks are deemed najis and haram, whether consumed in small or large quantities.

LPPOM reminded the public not to assume all traditional drinks are automatically halal simply because they come from natural ingredients. Fermentation can produce alcohol, so halal checks must cover raw materials, production processes, and final product characteristics.
