Universal Pictures has officially titled its Miami Vice reboot Miami Vice ’85, starring Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Austin Butler as James “Sonny” Crockett. Joseph Kosinski directs the film, which will be shot for IMAX and release in theaters on August 6, 2027. The story explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the original Universal Television series.

Miami Vice ’85 reunites the stylish undercover detectives in a fresh take on the 1980s classic. Deadline first reported last fall that Jordan and Butler were in talks for the roles, with deals closing recently after Universal greenlit the budget. Production is expected to begin in fall 2026. Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick and F1, told Variety he has long admired Jordan and sees Butler as a rising talent: “Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time... If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.” The screenplay comes from Dan Gilroy, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, who executive produced the original series with Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft. Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski produce, with Universal's Sara Scott and Christina Hoffrogge overseeing. Jordan recently won an Academy Award for his dual lead in Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler. Butler earned an Oscar nomination for Elvis and has starred in Dune: Part Two, The Bikeriders and Masters of the Air.

O que as pessoas estão dizendo

Reactions on X to the Miami Vice ’85 reboot announcement are mostly enthusiastic, praising the casting of Michael B. Jordan as Tubbs and Austin Butler as Crockett, director Joseph Kosinski's track record, the 1980s Miami setting, and IMAX format. Users express hype with comments on the actors' charisma and style, alongside nostalgic references to the original series. Skeptical sentiments criticize the reboot as unnecessary, question casting suitability compared to originals, and worry about lacking grit or substance.
