NASA astronaut conducts Filipino students' gyroscope experiment in space

A microgravity experiment designed by students from Rizal Technological University was performed aboard the International Space Station on March 24.

NASA astronaut Christopher Williams carried out the Double Gyroscope experiment inside the Kibo module. The test was part of the 2025 Asian Try Zero-G competition organized by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

The students Christopher Tumamac, Ryan Andrew Doña and Rose Ann Cezar developed the proposal. It was selected from 89 entries submitted in the Philippines between November 2024 and January 2025.

Philippine Space Agency officials said the results matched the students' predictions about gyroscope motion in microgravity. The findings will be presented at the competition wrap-up session later this year.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that a Filipino student experiment has been conducted on the station through the same regional program.

Lai Ka-ying will join the Shenzhou-23 crew launching on Sunday to the Tiangong space station as payload specialist.

The Philippine Space Agency and Philippine agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding with South Korea's Perigee Aerospace on March 4, 2026, to collaborate on rocket development and experimental launches in the Philippines. The agreement aims to test the feasibility of establishing a Philippine Spaceport, leveraging the country's equatorial proximity. It seeks to bolster the Philippines' capabilities in space research and engineering.

Following their successful launch, NASA's Artemis II astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft resolved a jammed toilet fan and Microsoft Outlook software glitches during the initial phase of their 10-day lunar orbit mission. The crew—Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialists Jeremy Hansen and Christina Koch—marks historic firsts: Glover as the first Black astronaut, Koch the first woman, and Hansen the first Canadian to venture toward the moon.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced the Ignition initiative on March 24, canceling the Lunar Gateway orbiting station to focus on a $20 billion three-phase moon base on the lunar surface. The shift, echoing Trump administration budget proposals, supports frequent Artemis crewed landings amid competition from China and preparations for the first crewed Artemis mission with a launch window opening April 1.
