Gavin McKenna, an 18-year-old forward for Penn State and a top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft, has been charged with felony aggravated assault following an alleged altercation at a bar in State College, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred Saturday night after Penn State's outdoor game against Michigan State, where McKenna recorded a goal and two assists. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

Gavin McKenna, a freshman from Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, who turned 18 on December 20, is facing four charges stemming from an incident at Doggie's Pub on Saturday evening. According to court documents, the charges include felony aggravated assault—defined as attempting to cause serious bodily injury or causing injury with extreme indifference—misdemeanor simple assault, and summary offenses of harassment and disorderly conduct. The complaint was filed on February 4, 2026, in Centre County, and McKenna awaits a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Casey McClain. No date has been set for the hearing.

The alleged altercation happened after Penn State's outdoor game against Michigan State at Beaver Stadium, attended by nearly 75,000 fans. McKenna contributed a goal and two assists in the Nittany Lions' 5-4 overtime loss. Reports indicate that McKenna and teammates were at the bar with friends and family when an unidentified individual, who reportedly chirped McKenna after he was asked to leave, suffered a broken jaw in the incident.

McKenna, projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft but recently ranked No. 4 due to an uneven NCAA start, has 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 24 games this season, tying for the team lead. His NCAA eligibility stems from a rule change allowing junior hockey players from leagues like the Western Hockey League to play Division I. Prior to Penn State, McKenna starred for the Medicine Hat Tigers, posting 129 points (41 goals, 88 assists) in 56 games during the 2024-25 season and helping them win the WHL championship.

Penn State athletics associate director John Hanna stated: “We are aware that charges have been filed; however, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment.” The NHL is aware of the charges but declined to comment. A source close to McKenna confirmed his involvement. The allegations remain unproven in court.
