PlayStation fans organize August blackout to protest disc-free future

A group called DoesItPlay has called for a week-long economic and gameplay blackout on PlayStation platforms from August 23 to August 30. The action responds to Sony's plan to end disc production for new games starting in 2028. Organizers ask participants to avoid logging in, playing, or making purchases during that period.

The protest was announced on July 26 by DoesItPlay, a game preservation and consumer rights group. It asks PlayStation owners to turn off consoles or log out from Sunday, August 23 at 7:00 local time through Sunday, August 30 at 7:00 PM local time.

DoesItPlay stated that Sony has grown disconnected from its fan base through actions such as closing studios like Bluepoint and ending physical discs. The group described the disc decision as the last straw and urged players to send a message while minimizing impact on publishers.

A related petition against the disc policy has grown from about 120,000 signatures on July 6 to over 345,000 by July 27. Sony has not commented on the planned blackout.

The protest builds on ongoing online criticism of Sony's all-digital plans announced earlier in 2026.
