Roberto Bautista Agut announces retirement after Wimbledon loss

Roberto Bautista Agut has retired from professional tennis following a first-round defeat at Wimbledon and an exhibition event in Spain. The former world No. 9 confirmed the decision on social media after 21 years on tour.

Bautista Agut lost to Joao Fonseca 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round at Wimbledon. He then played in the Copa del Rey de Tenis exhibition in Huelva, Spain, where he announced the end of his career alongside his family.

“The Copa del Rey Tennis Tournament has been my last event as a professional,” he wrote on X. “I was thrilled that it would be in Spain, and this iconic tournament was the perfect stage to bid farewell.”

The 38-year-old had previously indicated he would play through the end of the season. He turned professional in 2005, won 12 ATP titles and reached a career-high ranking of No. 9. His best Grand Slam result was a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon in 2019.
