Seoul district runs cooking class for middle-aged men

Seodaemun District held a cooking class for middle-aged and older men. Participants learned to make muffins and sandwiches.

On Sunday, 15 men in their 50s to 70s gathered at a shared kitchen in Seoul's Seodaemun District for a baking class. The program titled Kitchen Independence for Middle-Aged Men — Today, I'm the Chef focused on making blueberry muffins and ham-and-cheese sandwiches.

Participants piped batter into molds and assembled sandwiches despite limited experience. One man smiled at his muffins and said he would hurry home to give them to his wife while warm.

The class is the first project funded this year through the district's participatory budgeting program. It was proposed by resident Bae Sung-jin to reduce social isolation among older men. Seodaemun District Mayor Park Woon-ki said the district will expand such resident-led lifelong learning opportunities.
