SKR tightens recommendations for online doctors

Sweden's Municipalities and Regions (SKR) has tightened its recommendations for online doctors. It is now clearer when regions should reimburse digital care provided in another county. Reimbursement applies only to qualified medical care, not self-care advice.

Sweden's Municipalities and Regions (SKR) has updated its recommendations for online doctors. The changes clarify when regions should pay for digital care performed in another county. A digital care contact is eligible for reimbursement only if it constitutes qualified medical care, for example not for self-care advice without medical assessment.

Anna-Lena Hogerud, chair of SKR's healthcare delegation, welcomes the update. "It is good that we have now updated the recommendations with examples of when a digital care contact does not provide reimbursement. At the same time, it is frustrating that it has to be defined for online doctor companies what qualified care is. It shows that something is wrong in the online doctors' business model and care offering to the population," she says in a press release.

Hogerud calls for a thorough review of the system with so-called inter-county reimbursements.
