Teachers ready as school year 2026-2027 opens tomorrow

Teachers are in high spirits and schools are prepared to welcome 26 million to 28 million learners as the new school year begins on June 8, officials said.

The Teachers Dignity Coalition said schools across the country are ready despite flooding in parts of Bulacan. Chairman Benjo Basas noted that classes are expected to proceed as scheduled. The Department of Education declared all systems go for the opening. Undersecretary Carmela Oracion said preparations started after classes ended in March. The agency will implement a three-term calendar along with other reforms. The Department of Trade and Industry reported that school supply prices remain within suggested ranges with adequate stocks available. DepEd also dismissed social media claims of class suspensions as fake news.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara signed DepEd Order No. 009, Series of 2026, on April 16, officially setting public school opening on Monday, June 8, for the 2026-2027 school year under the approved three-term calendar policy—from which private schools are exempt.

Following the Economy and Development Council's approval of a three-term school calendar for public schools starting School Year 2026-2027, private schools are not required to adopt it without new legislation, according to the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA). DepEd maintains the policy resulted from broad consultations.
