Toni Nadal rules out full-time coaching for Rafael Nadal

Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's uncle and longtime coach, has dismissed speculation that the retired tennis star will take up full-time coaching. In an interview during the Barcelona Open, Toni cited Rafael's family commitments and other priorities as reasons against it. He also confirmed that his own professional coaching career is over.

Rafael Nadal recently drew attention when he was seen at his academy in Mallorca, observing Iga Swiatek's practice session alongside her coach, Francisco Roig. Swiatek had sought advice from Nadal, who recommended Roig and offered some input himself. However, Toni Nadal clarified to Mundo Deportivo that this does not signal a coaching role for his nephew. 'No, because his life is geared towards other things,' Toni said. 'A coach has to be 100% dedicated. With all the travel that entails.' He emphasized Rafael's responsibilities, including family and children, after more than 20 years on tour. Toni Nadal, who coached Rafael to 16 Grand Slam titles, explained the Swiatek interaction as limited involvement. 'He, as someone involved in tennis for so long, likes to get involved, even if only minimally,' he noted. Full-time coaching, with its demands, does not fit Rafael's current life focused on family, business, and the Rafa Nadal Academy. Toni also reflected on his own career, stating it is over. Since parting with Felix Auger-Aliassime in 2024, he has given motivational talks to companies. He turned down Alexander Zverev's offer this summer, saying he could not commit fully. 'Yes. I don’t see myself doing that anymore,' Toni said. 'Times have changed. If anything, I’d see myself as a consultant.'
