Two rare Brown Wood Owl chicks fledge in Hong Kong

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden in Hong Kong has confirmed the successful fledging of two Brown Wood Owl chicks in May.

The chicks, which began growing flight feathers last month, were kept under observation for several weeks before the announcement. Staff at the Tai Po facility described the young owls as healthy and lively in a social media post.

The Brown Wood Owl is among the largest owl species found in Hong Kong. The forest-dependent bird arrived naturally from southern China in the past two decades.

The species measures 39 to 55 centimetres in length with a wingspan of 125 to 167 centimetres. It features a deep brown upper body, large dark eyes and pale brownish underparts marked with fine dark bars.
