Uppsala reaches historic low in economic assistance recipients

The share of Uppsala adults receiving economic assistance fell to 1.03 percent in May, the lowest level since measurements began in 2014.

In May, 2,583 adults in Uppsala municipality received economic assistance. That is 875 fewer than at the start of 2023 when the figure stood at 3,458 people or 1.41 percent.

The level now sits just below the national average of 1.04 percent. The municipality is working toward a goal of no more than one percent of adult residents needing assistance.

Erik Pelling (S), chair of the municipal board, noted that each figure represents a person who has moved into work or studies. Pavlos Cavelier Bizas (S), chair of the labor market board, called the development an important milestone.

From July 1 a new law takes effect requiring people on economic assistance to take part in full-time activities.
