Tesla may upgrade FSD cameras with new IMX00N sensor

Tesla hacker Green has discovered code in recent firmware pointing to a new camera sensor called IMX00N. This could replace the current IMX963 in AI4 vehicles, potentially introducing advanced features like global shutter technology. The upgrade hints at an upcoming AI4.5 camera suite for improved Full Self-Driving capabilities.

Tesla often introduces hardware changes without fanfare, relying on enthusiasts to uncover them. In the latest firmware, hacker Green identified the IMX00N sensor, which appears as a successor to the IMX963 used in current AI4 vehicles. This suggests preparations for an AI4.5 camera system that could enhance autonomy features.

The existing IMX963, a custom version of Sony's IMX490, delivers strong performance with 5.4 megapixels at 2896 x 1876 resolution, 3.0μm pixels for low-light sensitivity, 120dB high dynamic range, and flicker mitigation. However, its rolling shutter scans images line by line, causing motion artifacts at high speeds that require extra processing to correct.

The IMX00N, absent from Sony's public catalogs, indicates a bespoke design tailored to Tesla's needs. Potential improvements include switching to a global shutter from Sony's Pregius line, which exposes all pixels simultaneously to eliminate distortion and reduce computational demands for tracking fast-moving objects. Resolution might increase to around 8 megapixels for 4K imaging, aiding future AI5 developments. Additionally, custom filters like RCCC could boost light sensitivity and edge detection at the expense of color accuracy, optimized for machine vision rather than human viewing. Features such as Dashcam and Sentry Mode might require software adjustments to maintain readability.

Retrofits remain uncertain. For Hardware 3 owners, any upgrade depends on Tesla's promised FSD V14-lite in 2026. AI4 vehicles are unlikely to see immediate changes due to calibration needs across all cameras. The new sensor could debut in revised Hardware 4 models, the Cybercab, or AI5 hardware in 2027.
