Mainland Chinese tourists visit Hong Kong landmarks for anniversary

Festive events on July 1 drew large numbers of mainland tourists to Hong Kong attractions, where they enjoyed complimentary ferry rides and museum admissions.

On July 1, crowds filled the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade and ferry piers as Hong Kong marked the 29th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty. Visitors took advantage of complimentary ferry rides, free museum admissions and discounts of up to 29 per cent on dining and retail.

Cai Shujuan, 62, from Hubei province, visited with her daughter and said: “We are very happy about the anniversary of Hong Kong’s return, because it means the city has returned to the embrace of the motherland.”

Tang Liye, a 50-year-old freelancer from Guangdong province, enjoyed the ferry trip from Tsim Sha Tsui to Wan Chai while filming videos of Victoria Harbour. Oil company Sinopec operated a booth handing out souvenirs at the pier.

Tour groups gathered along the waterfront to photograph the skyline and a parade of fishing boats.
