As Kenya prepares to launch secondary schools under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, education stakeholders have outlined key priorities for equity, quality, and progress. Speaking at the Kepsha annual conference in Mombasa, National Chairman Mr. Fuad Ali Abdalla emphasized the need for infrastructure, teacher capacity, and partnerships.
At the annual conference of the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (Kepsha) held in Mombasa, education stakeholders proposed measures to ensure the successful implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE) in secondary schools. National Chairman Mr. Fuad Ali Abdalla stated that the next phase of education reforms would focus on curriculum understanding, improving school infrastructure, and strengthening teacher capacity.
“Kenya, having succeeded in primary schools and preparing for secondary schools, must ensure every student, regardless of background, receives quality, inclusive, and transformative education,” said Mr. Abdalla.
Among the priorities is enhancing career guidance and curriculum awareness to help students and parents make informed decisions about CBE pathways. Schools are preparing detailed counseling plans, where specialized teachers will provide guidance and connect students to industries and universities.
The association calls for substantial investment in infrastructure and technology, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), arts, and sports. Mr. Abdalla urged the government to leverage public-private partnerships to expand laboratories, ICT centers, and sports facilities.
“Digital changes in schools must align with infrastructure expansion. Equitable access to modern teaching tools is no longer optional but essential,” he emphasized.
Another priority is teacher capacity and sufficiency, with calls for ongoing professional development in modern teaching, digital literacy, and student-centered assessment. On funding, the association requests a performance-linked system as outlined in the Basic Education Act (2025) to ensure timely and equitable resource distribution. Mr. Abdalla stressed parental and community involvement, promoting initiatives like Elimu Mashinani.
