Forskare förbereder sig för total solförmörkelse i augusti

Västeuropas första totala solförmörkelse sedan 1999 är planerad till den 12 augusti. Forskare kommer att använda händelsen för att studera solen och jordens atmosfär med kostnadseffektiva experiment från marken, luften och med ballonger.

Solförmörkelsen kommer att vara total över östra Grönland, västra Island och norra Spanien. Team från flera amerikanska universitet planerar att skicka upp höghöjdsballonger i Spanien och på Island utrustade med kameror, ozonsensorer och radiosonder för att mäta förändringar i det planetära gränsskiktet.

NASAs WB-57-flygplan kommer att flyga under förmörkelsen för att fånga polariserat koronaljus och infraröda observationer som är svåra att genomföra från marken. Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project och Citizen CATE-experimentet kommer att upprepa framgångsrika metoder från 2024 för att skapa en timelapse av solens korona.

Solfysikern Ryan French påpekar att solförmörkelser möjliggör nya forskningsidéer utan behov av stora anslag för rymdfarkoster. Andra grupper kommer att använda spektroskopi för att undersöka plasmahastigheter och temperaturer, förfina mätningar av solens radie samt testa för möjlig norrskensaktivitet över Island.
