Architect proposes extending Buenos Aires Line H for metropolitan integration

Architect and urbanist Andrés Borthagaray highlighted extending Buenos Aires subway Line H to Sáenz as key to metropolitan connectivity. In an analysis for Canal E, he emphasized opportunities to enhance the current network and link it with trains like Belgrano Sur. The proposal aims to transform urban mobility in the region.

The debate on expanding the subway in Buenos Aires is gaining prominence with projects that could transform urban mobility. Architect and urbanist Andrés Borthagaray analyzed the system's challenges and opportunities on Canal E, focusing on Line H. “The subway is a crucial city issue and there are ripe fruits, topics that if concretized would value accumulated efforts over many years,” he stated.

Line H is strategic for its connections but underused with fewer passengers, mostly transfers. Borthagaray proposes extending it from Hospitales to Sáenz, placing it among the top 10 busiest and projecting it to Lanús. “If instead of ending where it does today at Hospitales station, it ended at Sáenz station, it would be among the top 10 and allow projection to Lanús, becoming a true axis of metropolitan integration,” he explained.

He stressed integrating with the Belgrano Sur train and crossing the Riachuelo, just 3.5 kilometers from Plaza de Mayo, to benefit workers and students. The system dropped from 1.2 million to just over 800,000 daily passengers due to unfavorable tariffs and lack of integration with buses.

On funding, he criticized prioritizing highways with tolls over the subway and mentioned international credits. “It is desirable for it to reach the province; it is metropolitan infrastructure,” Borthagaray concluded.
