Asteroid Ryugu samples contain all five nucleobases for DNA and RNA

Samples from asteroid Ryugu contain all five canonical nucleobases, the key components of DNA and RNA. Japan's Hayabusa2 spacecraft collected the material during its 2018 visit and returned it to Earth in 2020. The discovery supports the idea that asteroids delivered life's building blocks to Earth billions of years ago.

In 2018, Japan's Hayabusa2 spacecraft approached the near-Earth asteroid Ryugu. It fired two projectiles—one small and one large—into the surface to collect debris, including subsurface material. The probe returned these samples to Earth in 2020, where researchers have since conducted detailed analyses. Yasuhiro Oba at Hokkaido University in Japan and colleagues studied two samples: one from the surface and one from subsurface layers. Both contained all five primary nucleobases, the compounds that form the basis of nucleic acids DNA and RNA when linked with sugars and phosphoric acid. Nucleobases have previously appeared in meteorites and samples from asteroid Bennu, though with varying abundances across sources. These differences may help trace fragments back to their parent asteroids and track the evolution of those bodies. The findings indicate nucleobases are widespread in the solar system. “Their detection in Ryugu strongly supports their ubiquity in the solar system,” Oba said. He added, “It is very likely that more complex organic molecules like nucleic acids are formed on asteroids.” The research appears in Nature Astronomy (DOI: 10.1038/s41550-026-02791-z).

Samples from asteroid Bennu, returned by NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission in 2023, contain amino acids that likely formed in frozen ice exposed to radiation, according to new research. Penn State scientists analyzed isotopes in the material, challenging traditional views of amino acid origins. The findings, published on February 9, highlight diverse pathways for life's building blocks in the early solar system.

Scientists have analyzed rare carbonaceous chondrites to uncover the composition of carbon-rich asteroids, identifying potential resources for future space exploration. The study, led by researchers at the Institute of Space Sciences, suggests certain asteroid types could yield water and materials, though large-scale mining remains challenging. Published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the findings highlight promising targets for missions to the Moon and Mars.

Scientists have discovered how a promising niobium deposit formed deep beneath central Australia more than 800 million years ago. The findings link the metal's origins to the ancient supercontinent Rodinia's breakup. Niobium plays a key role in strengthening steel and advancing clean energy technologies.

Scientists have identified the oldest confirmed human RNA virus in lung tissue from a woman who died in London around the 1770s. The rhinovirus, which causes the common cold, was reconstructed from fragmented genetic material preserved in alcohol. This discovery opens new possibilities for studying the evolution of RNA viruses in human history.
