Baada ya kifo cha mumewe mwaka 2008, Josephine Wainaina amekuwa akipambana na maisha magumu pamoja na watoto wake wawili. Askofu EllyJoy Moi wa kanisa la Holy Well of Bethel huko Limuru amewahimiza viongozi kuunda sera maalum za kuwalinda wajane dhidi ya unyanyasaji, kunyimwa mali na matatizo ya akili.

Josephine Wainaina, mwenye umri wa miaka 53, alipoteza kila kitu baada ya kifo cha mumewe mwaka 2008. “Nilipoteza kila kitu. Tulitoka pale tulipokuwa tunaishi na kuanza maisha upya,” anasema. Alilazimika kufanya kazi za vibarua ili kuwalisha watoto wake wakati wajane wengi nchini wakipitia matatizo sawa kimya kimya, ikiwemo kufukuzwa nyumbani, kunyimwa mali na kutengwa na familia zao, kulingana na Askofu EllyJoy Moi wa Holy Well of Bethel, Limuru. “Wengi wao hufukuzwa nyumbani, wanaachwa bila chochote na bado wanapaswa kulea watoto. Wengine hujificha kwenye ulevi au hata kufikia hatua ya kujaribu kujiua kutokana na msongo wa mawazo,” anasema askofu huyo. Kupitia kanisa lake, ameanzisha mpango unaowapa chakula cha msingi kama unga, mafuta, sukari na maharagwe, pamoja na msaada wa kisaikolojia. Daktari Yuvinalis Momanyi, mtaalamu wa saikolojia anayeshirikiana na kanisa, anasema, “Wajane hupitia hatua tofauti na bila msaada, wanaweza kuzama zaidi katika huzuni au hata kukataliwa na jamii.” Hivi karibuni, zaidi ya wajane 80 walisafiri Mombasa kwa mapumziko ya wiki moja yaliyoandaliwa na askofu, ambapo walifurahia kuogelea na kujenga matumaini mapya. Askofu Moi anasisitiza hitaji la sera za serikali kuhusu urithi wa mali, afya ya akili na uwezeshaji kiuchumi, ikiwemo mawakili na madaktari maalum.
