Fida issues ultimatum to government on femicide

The Federation of Women Lawyers has given the government 40 days to act on gender-based violence or face nationwide protests.

The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has issued an ultimatum to the Kenyan government. The group threatens to organise peaceful protests across the country if key demands are not met within 40 days.

In a statement released on May 20, FIDA called for gender-based violence to be declared a national disaster. It also asked for a status report on the implementation of recommendations from the Technical Working Group established by President William Ruto.

The organisation further demanded the creation of a dedicated GBV fund to support prevention and survivor care. FIDA cited recent cases including the death of Rachel Wandeto and the killing of student Sylvia Kemunto as evidence of the ongoing crisis.

Failure to respond could lead to strategic interest litigation by the group. President Ruto had previously vowed to pursue justice in the Wandeto case.
