Ruto extends panel on compensation of protest victims by 90 days

President William Ruto has extended the term of the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations by 90 days. The move follows concerns over delays in compensating victims of protests. The extension runs from June 5 to September 5, 2026.

Chief of Staff Felix Koskei issued a gazette notice confirming the extension on June 12. The panel was first appointed in March 2026 to address compensation for victims from 2017 to 2024.

Ruto had previously stated in March that victims would be compensated by June using a KSh 2 billion allocation. The extension means the original timeline will not be met.

Koskei said the additional time will allow the panel to complete its mandate on restorative justice and compensation mechanisms. Victims had threatened fresh demonstrations over the delays.
