Colombia issues alert over possible El Niño strengthening between December and February

Colombian authorities report a 96% probability that the El Niño phenomenon will strengthen between December 2026 and February 2027, and urge immediate preventive measures.

The El Niño phenomenon keeps Colombian authorities on alert. According to official information, it is already causing changes such as reduced rainfall, higher temperatures and greater risk of forest fires.

Minister of Mines and Energy Edwin Palma sent a letter to the Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission over delays in issuing regulations. In May the CREG took on the commitment to issue eight measures, but to date only one is being applied, related to maintenance of the SPEC regasification plant.

Authorities recommend that citizens turn off the tap when not needed, shorten shower times and avoid wasting water. They also asked territorial entities to activate prevention and response plans.

A forest can take up to 80 years to recover after a fire, so officials insist on avoiding campfires, burns and throwing cigarette butts in natural areas.
