Experts propose realistic first steps toward 100 GW solar target

In last Friday's media briefing, two energy experts stressed the need for phased approaches and quick wins to realize the 100 GW solar program targeted for completion before 2029.

IESR CEO Fabby Tumiwa argued that the 100 GW PLTS program must begin with measurable quick wins. He proposed three priority agendas: accelerating dedieselisasi, scaling rooftop solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems, and developing village solar models through cooperatives or BUMDes.

Fabby stated that quick wins are essential to demonstrate the program as a real energy transformation strategy. President Prabowo Subianto had earlier affirmed the government's commitment to accelerate solar development as part of the national energy transition and self-reliance agenda.

Meanwhile University of Indonesia expert Eko Adhi Setiawan suggested starting with a 10 GW pilot project as a proof-of-concept phase. He said this approach is more realistic given human resource readiness and the national solar industry ecosystem before expanding to a larger scale.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) inaugurated factories with significant capacity for the energy sector in Hawassa Industrial Park on Miyazya 17, 2018 EC (April 25, 2026). Three solar factories and a supporting gas factory were launched. Together, the solar plants will generate over 11.3 gigawatts of clean power annually.

Egypt's presidency announced on Tuesday a plan to add 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to its national grid in 2026, aiming to bolster electricity stability and cut reliance on fossil fuels. The statement came after a meeting between President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and the ministers of electricity and petroleum.

Egypt is moving forward with a plan to generate 200 megawatts of solar power for state-owned industrial sites. The initiative was discussed on Monday during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Hussein Issa and a senior United Nations official.

Two new reports from the International Energy Agency and Ember highlight 2025 as a pivotal year for renewable energy, with solar power leading growth and renewables surpassing coal in global electricity generation for the first time in over a century. This progress occurred amid a war in Iran that disrupted 20 percent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. The analyses point to an emerging 'age of electricity' driven by renewables.

The Indonesian government targets revitalization of 71,744 educational units in 2026 with a Rp14 trillion budget as part of President Prabowo Subianto's broader five-year plan to renovate 300,000 schools. Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti stated that Rp2.6 trillion has been realized so far. The program prioritizes schools damaged by disasters and those in underdeveloped regions.
