Kenyan professor appointed to WHO STI advisory group

Professor Kenneth Ngure from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has been appointed to the World Health Organization Technical Advisory Group on Sexually Transmitted Infections. His three-year term began in June 2026 after a competitive international selection process.

Professor Kenneth Ngure works in the Department of Environmental Health and Disease Control at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is recognised for his contributions to HIV prevention, implementation science, sexual and reproductive health, and public health policy. He has led multiple multicountry research projects and serves as president-elect of the International AIDS Society.

Ngure said he was deeply honoured by the appointment. He added that he looked forward to working with colleagues worldwide to ensure scientific evidence informs policies that improve health outcomes, especially in low- and middle-income countries. He also expressed pride in representing JKUAT and Kenya on the global platform.

The advisory group guides WHO on policies, evidence, and strategies to prevent and control sexually transmitted infections. The WHO reports that more than one million curable STIs are acquired daily among people aged 15 to 49. In Kenya, about 1.48 million people are living with HIV.
