LinkedIn introduces AI coding skill assessments for profiles

LinkedIn is enhancing user profiles with verifiable proficiency levels in AI coding tools, partnering with several tech companies to assess skills objectively. This feature aims to help recruiters identify candidates experienced with emerging AI technologies amid growing automation in the workforce. The update comes as AI tools contribute to job displacements in tech sectors.

LinkedIn, the professional networking platform, has launched a new feature allowing users to display their expertise in AI coding tools directly on their profiles. Unlike traditional self-reported skills, these proficiency levels are assessed and assigned by the companies behind the AI platforms themselves.

The initiative involves partnerships with Replit, Lovable, Descript, and Relay.app, with ongoing integrations planned for Microsoft-owned GitHub and Zapier. For instance, Lovable might award a "bronze" level in "vibe coding," Replit uses numerical ratings, and Relay.app could designate someone as an "intermediate" level "AI Agent Builder." These assessments update dynamically as users gain more experience with the tools.

This development arrives at a time when AI adoption has led to significant layoffs across industries, raising concerns about job security. Pat Whealan, LinkedIn's head of career products, emphasized the feature's role in signaling relevant competencies without overshadowing other professional qualifications. "AI-specific skills are an increasingly important signal to recruiters and the latest update will make it easier for them to assess candidates' skills," Whealan told Engadget. He added, "This is less about replacing any of those other existing signals, and more about showing new ways that people are doing work. And how do we give a verifiable signal to both hirers and other people looking at their profile, that they actually are using these tools on a regular basis."

By providing third-party validated badges, LinkedIn seeks to bridge the gap between user claims and demonstrable abilities in the fast-evolving field of AI-assisted development.
