Panache Digital Games apologizes for AI use in 1666: Amsterdam

Panache Digital Games has admitted to using generative AI assets in the prologue of 1666: Amsterdam after player backlash. The studio pledged to replace the assets with human-created art in an upcoming update.

The Amsterdam-based developer posted an apology on X on June 9. It confirmed that some early AI-generated versions of in-game portraits and marketing assets had appeared in the prologue released on Steam.

The statement noted that the studio employs a team of more than a dozen artists. It said human-made replacements will arrive soon and that neither the Early Access version nor the full game will contain any AI-generated assets.

The prologue followed the game's reveal at Summer Game Fest. Players had questioned the assets shortly after the release.
