Security guards union threatens action over minimum wage

The Kenya National Private Security Workers Union has demanded strict enforcement of the KSh 30,000 minimum wage, warning it will remove non-compliant firms from government sites.

The union accused some private security firms of ignoring the wage order while holding government contracts. Speaking in Nairobi, the Secretary General called on the Ministry of Labour to enforce the directive and bar non-compliant companies from public tenders.

"I want to ask the CS for Labour that as you have gazetted the minimum wages and general wages in various sectors of the Republic of Kenya, you must put into place mechanisms to make sure the directive by the President is respected and obeyed," he said.

The union warned it would mobilise members to eject non-compliant firms from assignments. It also noted that the Employment and Labour Relations Court dismissed a challenge to the wage in February 2025, a ruling it described as a victory for more than 1.3 million guards.
