Murkomen directs police to protect peaceful June 25 protesters

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed police to protect peaceful protesters during the June 25 demonstrations marking one year since the 2024 protests.

Speaking at a Peace and Security Meeting in Angata Barikoi on June 24, Murkomen stated that police are ready to provide security for those engaging in peaceful protests tomorrow. He urged officers to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any situation that could justify the use of force.

Murkomen warned that the government will not hesitate to use any means to quell violent protests and ordered everyone to report to work, children to attend school and businesses to operate as usual. He stressed that the National Police Service is well-equipped to ensure the country remains safe.

The demonstrations are set to mark the anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z-led protests. President William Ruto has acknowledged the right to protest but warned against violence or destruction of property. Some officials have declared gatherings in the Nairobi Central Business District illegal due to lack of permits.
