Senator Cherargei proposes Ksh18,000 pay for community health promoters

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called for community health promoters to receive a monthly salary of Ksh18,000 instead of their current Ksh5,000 stipend.

Speaking at a public forum on June 13, Cherargei said the current pay does not meet constitutional minimum wage standards and fails to support workers amid economic pressures.

Cherargei highlighted the promoters' role in delivering primary healthcare, including checking blood pressure and blood sugar levels and distributing medicines to households.

He also backed plans to convert universal health coverage workers to permanent and pensionable positions after six years of contract work, stating that the national government would employ them if county governments decline.

The Council of Governors has opposed the move, citing the need for sufficient funding and formal agreements on payroll transfers.
