SiS report urges fewer isolations of children

Sweden's SiS authority states in a new report that many isolations and physical interventions against children could have been avoided. Between 2023 and 2025 more than 2,800 isolations were carried out.

The report shows that nearly one in three measures could possibly have been prevented. Girls were affected especially hard, accounting for 63 percent of isolation decisions despite being fewer in number than boys.

A young woman who calls herself Emma describes her time at a SiS home at age 17. She experienced much violence and felt completely unsupported.

– I felt hopeless, powerless and alone, she says.

Youth care director Birgitta Dahlberg says SiS is working to individualize care more, especially for girls who are often isolated.
