Verstappen says 2026 rules penalise fastest F1 drivers

Max Verstappen told reporters in Budapest that the 2026 Formula 1 power unit regulations prevent the quickest drivers from making a difference on track. The Red Bull driver spoke during media day at the Hungarian Grand Prix, days after Oscar Piastri criticised the same rules following the Spa-Francorchamps race weekend.

Verstappen said the self-learning energy management systems neutralise lap time advantages gained in corners. He explained that small differences in throttle input or external factors such as wind can alter energy deployment later in a lap, effectively penalising faster driving.

The Dutchman added that this has led to closer battles between team-mates across the grid this season. "You're not allowed to make a difference because it will just penalise you on the next straight," he said.

Verstappen also criticised the new overtaking dynamics. He noted that drivers can pass others on straights simply by using battery power while doing nothing else, calling the process "very different" from traditional racing. He said real fans understand the change is not authentic, even if casual viewers see more overtakes.

The comments came after Verstappen joked in Belgium that critics might "shoot" him for speaking out. He later clarified the remark in Hungary, stating he was only joking.
